What is the Moonshell Emulator?
The Moonshell Emulator shows you what your website will look like once it is available as a native iPhone App. Technically, the Moonshell Emulator is a UIWebView emulator. UIWebViews are used in iPhone applications to display web content inside a native iPhone App. The Moonshell Emulator will show you what your website will look like when you display it inside of a native iPhone Application.
Basically:
- If it looks good in the Moonshell Emulator, it will look good on the iPhone
- If it looks bad in the Moonshell Emulator, it will look bad on the iPhone
Here are the rules:
- Doesn't scale, content should be supplied at 320 width
- Best viewed on PC or Mac in Safari
- Oversized images will generate horizontal scroll and not be displayed correctly
- Tool to visually preview, not to test navigation
- Java, Flash and Silverlight do not work in Mobile Safari
Limitations:
- All browsers are different and none are fully compatible with each other. This means that what you see on your computer screen is always going to be different from what you will see rendered on an iPhone. Safari comes closest to Mobile Safari. Therefore we suggest using the emulator in Safari.
- The emulator can't detect the length of your page, therefore the page height is set to 3000 pixels. If your page is shorter you will be able to scroll below your content and see a dark screen only. This is an artifact of the emulator, Moonshell apps on the iPhone do NOT have this problem.
- When navigating back to a previous screen the emulator does not go to the top of the page. Moonshell apps on the iPhone will properly go to the top of the screen when navigating back.
